Underground Gas Storage - Reliability of Energy Security

Abstract

The current geopolitical situation in the world confirms that the struggle for possession of mineral and energy resources is the most common reason for confrontations and conflicts across the planet.

Usually, natural gas and oil represents the most important energy resources, especially for powerful countries. Therefore, having sufficient capacities of underground gas storage is of particular importance in the economy and industry of each country.

This professional paper discusses the issue of uneven consumption of natural gas, the strategic importance of underground gas storage and the necessity of its construction in order to resolve the discrepancy between production and consumption, optimal exploitation of gas deposits, security and supply of gas, especially to large consumers, reducing production costs and leasing storage facilities, and more efficient use of the gas transportation and distribution system.

The intention of this article is to demonstrate the justification for building and possessing the necessary underground gas storage capacities, which would enable and guarantee the smooth functioning of the energy and industrial system of every country, including Serbia, especially in emergency conditions.
